Two days before Christmas, our group of volunteers decided to take some elderly residents from a local retirement home for a walk through the old town of Ljubljana. Accompanied by an occupational therapist and a social care worker, we headed off towards Preseren Square in the centre of Ljubljana at about ten o’clock in the morning. It was a crisp and sunny day, which contributed to a special Christmassy atmosphere. The volunteers helped the people with walking difficulties, and there were also some wheelchairs in case anyone needed a rest. After we had reached our destination Preseren Square, we enjoyed some refreshments and a pleasant chat with the pensioners.
Due to staff shortage, the elderly residents do not often benefit from social activities outside the retirement home. It goes without saying that not only the residents but also the employees are grateful to the support of our volunteers, giving them the opportunity to enjoy some time outside their facilities. Especially the dementia patients need special attention and care, as they are extremely sensitive and mistrustful towards strangers. Fortunately, this was not the case with our group and they seemed to appreciate the company.
When we returned to the retirement home it was hard to say goodbye, so we decided to come back soon. On the 8th of January we arranged our second stroll through the old town of Ljubljana.
We are very pleased that we were able to repeat the gatherings several times throughout the year 2015.
